Dubai starts replacing signs across 186 areas: Makani numbers and QR codes on every house plate

The Supreme Committee for Urban Planning announced a new addressing identity for Dubai on 7 October 2026. The RTA and Dubai Municipality will carry out the work, replacing street signs and house number plates across 186 areas, which sit inside 19 sectors. Installation starts in the fourth quarter of 2026 and the rollout runs to 2030.

Phase one covers 5 areas: Za'abeel 1, Za'abeel 2, Nad Al Sheba, Al Khawaneej 1 and Nazwa. More than 2,000 signs will be installed or replaced there.

The programme includes area identification signs at the entrances to each area, internal street name signs in 5 colours matched to the surrounding landscape (blue for areas by the sea, gold for desert surroundings), and house number plates showing the property's Makani number beside a QR code. Bus stops, area map boards and smart apps follow in later phases.

The QR codes are meant to return the sector and area name, the meaning of the street or area name, and nearby points of interest.

Priority depends on growth, density, activity, the number of residents and visitors an area draws, and whether its streets have formal addressing.
