Two contracts worth AED 1.161 billion have been awarded for Al Meydan Street, with work due to finish at the end of 2028. The awarding body is Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The scheme covers 17 kilometres of road, 3,700 metres of bridges and a cycling track, on the corridor from First Al Khail Street up to Umm Suqeim Street. RTA puts the catchment at more than 500,000 residents.
Contract one, about 14 kilometres, runs from Latifa bint Hamdan Street to Umm Suqeim Street and also rebuilds Al Marabea' Street. It includes an interchange with 1,600 metres of bridges, rated at 14,400 vehicles an hour. Contract two covers roughly 2 kilometres from First Al Khail Street to Muscat Street, with an interchange of 1,400 metres of bridges, also rated at 14,400 vehicles an hour.
RTA expects capacity on the north to south corridor to rise 18 per cent. The run from Al Manama Street up to Umm Suqeim Street is forecast to fall from 30 minutes to 10.
