RTA and Dubai Airports plan roads and rail for Al Maktoum International: what it means for Dubai South

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Airports met on 17 September 2026 to review road and public transport projects planned around Al Maktoum International, the Dubai South airport being built to take over from DXB.
RTA director general Mattar Al Tayer hosted Dubai Airports chief executive Paul Griffiths. The RTA side included the heads of its Rail Agency, its Traffic and Roads Agency and its strategy sector. No budgets were announced.
The agenda covered projects to absorb growth at Al Maktoum International and Dubai South, better access to the district from the rest of the city, and traffic improvements on the corridors that feed DXB. Both sides agreed to keep transport plans in step with the aviation expansion.
Dubai Airports has already set the second runway at Al Maktoum International for the end of 2027, and the first phase, sized for 150 million passengers, for the early 2030s.
